Wondering how to take care of commercial floors? You’re in the right place.

Cooler weather conditions bring a variety of maintenance challenges, and floor care is no exception. With increases in rain, wind, and stormy weather, a lot more moisture ends up indoors –  which can be a challenge to clean.

Plus, wet floors are a slipping hazard for everyone.

Don’t worry, though. With the right precautions, you can take care of your commercial floors so they’ll last longer, look better, and be safer to walk on.

Ready to learn how? Let’s get started.

Get Your Floors Resealed

Your floors can look a little tired and worn out during the winter months, even if they don’t need replacing yet. An easy way to fix this?

Have all the hard floors in your building resealed. But don’t do it whenever! The best time to get this done is either before or after winter – never during.

Install Entrance Mats

Entrance mats are an ideal way to make sure your freshly-resealed floors stay in the best possible shape. So, what mats are best?

There are plenty to choose from, but the scraper mat is a solid choice for high-traffic areas. Why? Because it’s designed to remove 90% of the dirt that gets stuck on shoes and also dry them out.

With that said, regular wiper mats can work for other areas that get less foot traffic. The main thing is to have a system in place that can prevent your floors from getting beat up unnecessarily.

Periodically Apply a Floor Neutralizer

As we’ve already established, having a system of mats in place is a great way to minimize weather-related floor damage and efficiently take care of commercial floors.

But is it completely failproof?

No.

Chances are, things like water and dirt will still end up on your floors – even with the right precautions in place.

If so, it’s time to act, since these white marks can end up damaging your floors until there’s no going back and they have to be replaced altogether.

All this to say that there’s a solution: Applying a floor neutralizer at least a few times per week can help prolong the life of commercial floors. That’s because neutralizers gently remove all kinds of residue that get deposited over time and eat away at your floors, like residue from harsh cleansers.

For best results, start using a floor neutralizer in the fall when you do your regular fall maintenance. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much of a difference regular upkeep can make in the long term to keep your floors looking good.

Perform Regular Cleaning

Is this step somewhat of a no-brainer? Maybe. But it’s worth repeating: Making sure your floors stay in the best shape starts with making sure the basics get done correctly.

Without a good foundation, the other steps outlined here won’t be as effective.

So, for example, at the end of every workday, all floors should get vacuumed or swept, and then non-carpeted floors should be moped down. You also might want to consider steaming your floors regularly, but this will depend on your facility.
